Question :1

If the numerator of certain fraction is increased by 200% and the denominator is increased by 150% the new fraction is thus formed is $9/10$. What is the original fraction?

Answer: (c)

Let the numerator be x & denominator be y

$\text"x + 200% of x"/\text"y + 150% of y" = 9/10$

${x + 200/100 x}/{y + 150/100 y} = 9/10$

${3x}/{2.5y} = 9/10$

$x/y = {9 × 2.5}/{10 × 3} = 22.5/30 = 225/300 = 3/4$

Question :2

In a competition 10,000 boys and 12,000 girls have appeared. If 26% of boys and 15% of girls could qualify, what is the overall % of students who could not qualify the test ?

Answer: (b)

Question :3

A speaks truth in 75% and B in 80% cases. In what percentage of cases are they likely to contradict each other when narrating the same incident?

Answer: (b)

Let the truth spoken by A and B be $p_l$ and $p_2$ respectively, i.e., $p_1 = 3/4$ and $p_2 = 4/5$

They will contradict each other only when one speaks truth and the other is lying.

i.e., $3/4 × 1/5 + 4/5 × 1/4 = 3/20 + 4/20 = 7/20 = 35/100$ i.e., 35%

Question :4

Six-eleventh of a number is equal to twenty-two percent of second number. Second number is equal to the one-fourth of third number. The value of the third number is 2400. What is the 45% of first number?

Answer: (e)

According to question

Third number = 2400

Second number = $2400 × 1/4 = 600$

Again,

First number × $6/11$ = Second number × $22/100$

First number = $600 × 22/100 × 11/6 = 242$

45% of the first number = $242 × 45/100$ = 108.9

Question :5

Groundnut oil is now being sold at Rs. 27 per kg. During last month its cost was Rs. 24 per kg. Find by how much % a family should reduce its consumption, so as to keep the expenditure same.

Answer: (c)

% change in rate = ${27 – 24}/24 × 100 = 100/8$ %

For fixed expenditure, % change in consumption

= ${%\text" change in rate"}/{100 + % \text"change in rate"$ × 100

= ${100/8}/{100[1 + 1/8]} × 100 = 100/9% = 11{1}/9%$
